The first row of modules was printed specifically for the Hyndman Gallery here at the Lubeznik Center for the Arts. They align along a horizon line that mirrors both the curvature of the gallery and the nearby horizon of Lake Michigan. The gallery’s columns are wrapped in emergency blankets—a material designed for crisis, to preserve body heat and repel water—here reimagined as protective coverings for architectural supports. These reflective surfaces suggest fragility and protection simultaneously while amplifying the play of light throughout the space. The photographs become a spatial experience: the modular panels form a corridor that invites viewers to move around and behind the images, where the echoes of the printing process can be seen on the reverse. This arrangement creates an interior environment for pause and reflection, bathed in pink light. Color functions here as both spatial intervention and emotional charge. The use of saturated hues evokes a “raging RGB” intensity. Light and color transform the gallery into an immersive atmosphere—an environment where pink illumination allows the photographs to stand out and engage dynamically with their surroundings. Each panel is suspended by aluminum bars and neon yellow zip ties. Both materials chosen to evoke urgency, improvisation, and a sense of immediacy rooted in urban experience. The source images are photographs of broken glass taken in Chicago’s Loop following the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests. They have been digitally decomposed into 27 modules&nbsp;measuring 96 by 36 inches each. Processed through a halftone technique originally developed for print, the images are broken into dots of varying size that create tonal depth and optical blending. Each panel results from a mixed-media process involving heat and reflective foil, transforming the photographic surface into an object that captures and refracts light, memory, and emotion. By stepping into the gallery space, itself an act of transition, visitors are confronted with a captivating material and sensory experience only possible in a disparate and unified human tapestry—an amalga. Derived from the word ‘amalgamation’, amalga aims to illustrate the multifaceted immigrant experience and ideal of the ‘melting pot’ as one deeply entangled with personal history, ways of seeing, and the balancing act of constructing a hybridized cultural identity. Through a combination of installation, photography, painting and other media, these artists delve into the complexities of the politicized immigrant body in relation to displacement, memory and resilience. Influenced by her ongoing exploration of surfaces and perception, Burundarena reimagines spaces like Northerly Island—where urban debris forms an unlikely oasis—as sites of hidden beauty and tranquility. Through photography and installation, she captures the ephemeral qualities of these often forgotten places, layering her work with a sense of memory and time. Her installations aim to seduce and confuse, triggering surprise and curiosity. The French-born, Argentina-raised artist works across multiple mediums—photography, print, collage, and digital projection—to reassemble fragments of reality, pushing the viewer to question their relationship to what they see. Her use of vibrant color—neon pinks, intense blues and holographic greens—reflects her upbringing in a digital world of screens, where images are fluid, flexible, and unbound by traditional frames. Surfaces, for Burundarena, are more than just visual; they carry encrypted messages that demand closer inspection. I photographed the painting and used the original 4 × 4 ft image as a module, repeating it to match the dimensions of the wall (36 × 12 ft) and form a large-scale pattern. The painting is composed of four squares, and I extended this logic by subdividing each module into four parts. During this period, the artist has been playing with finding pleasure and uncovering desire through the sense of discovery. Using photography, print media, and collage, she cuts out, reassembles, and condenses pieces of reality to play with multiple dimensions and velocities. Thus, the viewer becomes so entranced by the images formed with the interference of light that they inevitably escape to the new reality where holographic memory takes them. This solo show is a continuation of the artist’s exploration of the boundaries of image and light.&nbsp; For this exhibition, she plays with the gallery space to make it the show's protagonist. The viewer starts by walking down the staircase wrapped in emergency blankets. By packaging the architectural element, she emphasizes the transitional quality of the staircase and invites people to slow down to notice how the light and space change due to the reflective quality of the foil. As they go down, they see a monumental image fragmented into columns. By thinking of the retina as a surface and the surface as a retina that records images of imprinted memories blown up, she toys with the spatial sensation of the depth, speeding up the velocity of its perception. The artist also utilizes filters to interrogate the viewer’s relationship to the image and how they experience and understand the pieces. This can be further seen in the wrapped columns and projections in the space. The little gallery zooms into a grid of smaller works. Using her personal photographic archive to surround the visitor with these works, Burundarena romanticizes a memory of what is lost, abandoned, and broken. Here the viewer is forced to slow down once again to endeavor to understand what they are seeing in each of the images, creating a sense of intimacy. Hologram of a Memory is a choice to play with the exhibition space. The artist engages with the tension of multiple velocities and dimensions to create a sense of awe that goes beyond beauty and admiration.
